President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has pardoned former regent and graft convict Syaukani Hasan Rais, who is suffering from ill health.
Cipinang Prison chief I Wayan Sukerta told tempointeraktif.com Thursday that the President had deducted three years from Syaukani's six-year sentence.
“Syaukani is no longer a prisoner,” Sukerta said.
Sukerta said the pardon letter was signed on Sunday. The prison has given the official release letter to Syaukani, who is being treated at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Central Jakarta.
Sukerta said Syaukani had been ill for quite some time, suffering from paralysis and blindness.
The Corruption Court sentenced Syaukani to two-and-a-half years for corruption in December 2007, but in July 2008 the Supreme Court increased the term to six years.
